VP Finance

Remote (Canada)

Overstory Media Group is an independent media company that delivers high-quality, fact-based journalism and storytelling to the communities we’re in. At OMG our goal is to empower communities – connected by geography, industry, or interest – with information delivered by the people within them.

We do this by identifying journalists, creators, and existing brands who share in this belief and provide tools, resources, and financial support to help them create in their communities.

Today we have 10 community brands and over 30 full-time staff across Canada under our umbrella. We plan to continue growing – by 2023 we will add 250 people to our headcount and launch 50 new community brands. Some of the publications we’ve built to date include Capital Daily, Vancouver Tech Journal, Burnaby Beacon, and Fraser Valley Current.

The opportunity:

OMG is looking for a rockstar to join our executive team as our VP Finance. This isn’t your typical finance role – we don’t want someone to just look at numbers and tell us how much we can’t be spending. We’re looking for someone creative who wants to make an impact in a big way, helping us achieve our vision of creating better connected communities.

Reporting to the CEO, the VP Finance will be involved in high-level decision making, overall business strategy, developing and implementing financial and operational policies, and be a leading voice in the organization.

About you:

  • You have a minimum of an undergrad in business/finance/accounting with a CPA or like designation.
  • You bring experience in Managerial Accounting and Financial Management.
  • You’ve worked in a fast-paced environment, ideally with startup experience, and can handle working under pressure and with tight deadlines.
  • You’re used to working remotely, and while you may not love it, know how to connect with people and build relationships no matter where you are.
  • You have strong organizational skills and a real eye for the small details.
  • You, ideally, have led successful mergers and acquisitions, from end to end.
  • You have a well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • You know how to take opportunities and see them through to their full potential.
  • You are creative and innovative, and aren’t scared to generate new ideas and approaches to problems.
  • You value honesty, integrity, accountability, and fairness.

In this role you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Maintain our financial model and forecasts to guide OMG’s long-term financial strength.
  • Direct all aspects of accounting operations, overseeing all transactions related to general ledger, receivables, payables, payroll, and financial reporting, and ensuring records are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Oversee, direct, and organize the work of the finance team.
  • Analyze the company's financial results with respect to profits, trends, costs, and compliance with budgets, and issue regular status and ad hoc reports to the CEO.
  • Provide strategic guidance around capital financing options to support company growth needs.
  • Assist senior management in financial planning and results management. Work with other team members to understand revenue and cost drivers and define appropriate reports for tracking.
  • Coordinate, prepare, and review monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Manage all tax planning and compliance with all required federal, provincial, local, payroll, property, and other applicable taxes.
  • Manage insurance coverage for the organization, including compliance.
  • Be responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of financial information to appropriate groups, including internal parties, government regulators, and outside agencies.
  • Lead and devise M&A strategies, identifying markets and companies that might be viable business targets.
  • Lead the M&A transaction process, including due diligence, synergy review, “day one” readiness assistance, and post-acquisition integration.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Travel, as needed, to our current and future communities, and for events where you'll represent the organization.

Perks of working with us:

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Full-time position with a competitive compensation package.
  • Flexible work hours and vacation policy.
  • A commitment to an open, inclusive, and diverse work culture.
