Senior Communications Advisor

Victoria, BC

New leadership team with a new vision is excited to bring talent to our team with two Senior Communications Advisor roles. Help BC Ferries chart its course into the future with a focus on communication strategy, media relations, issues management, corporate communications and/or capital project communications.

 

To be the right fit, you are a self-starter and problem-solver seeking a role where you can make a difference every day with frequent deliverables. You’ve done this type of work and manage beautifully independently under limited supervision and guidance while knowing you have the backup you need to support your efforts.

 

The right candidates for these roles are proven strategic communicators who understand and can integrate storytelling with proactive issues management and who have exceptional relationship building skills. If you have experience on camera or as a media spokesperson, even better. 

 

Hybrid work is available and the role can be located in Victoria or in the lower mainland.

The Role

Reporting into a Director and managing a small team, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:

  • Drafting and developing communications strategies and plans for company-wide/corporate and external communications to support special projects in various areas of the company,
  • Drafting and developing a variety of communications materials including: communications strategies and plans, news releases, positioning notes, memos, presentations, reports, speeches, correspondence, advertorials, newspaper copy, internet and intranet copy,
  • Managing workload while supporting several special projects simultaneously, working in close collaboration with project managers and key stakeholders,
  • Working independently and produces complicated, high profile communications products that require little revision,
  • Responding to requests from media, as needed,
  • Proactively identifying story ideas and pitches to appropriate news media. Acting as corporate spokesperson from time to time,
  • Rotating handling of the media line on weekends/after hours in the event of an emergency, and 
  • Assisting with special event planning. 


The Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree, certificate or diploma in journalism, public relations, applied communications or a related discipline or related experience
  • Experience in a public relations or communications role with high visibility in the public eye. Candidates with established media connections (i.e., writers and reporters) are highly preferred.
  • Experience in coordinating day-to-day print and electronic communications services, including the preparation of information materials, such as news releases, FAQs, presentations, speeches, briefing notes and media responses
  • Experience working with senior executives and members of the media
  • A self-starter who takes initiative and requires little supervision
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, research and project management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and in a team. Previous leadership or management responsibilities are considered an asset
  • Willingness to work flexible hours under changing conditions

Additional information

The target salary range: $81,000 to $101,300 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
