Library Assistant - Resource Sharing

Victoria, BC

Within UVic Libraries Collection Management Services, the Resource Sharing unit encompasses Interlibrary Loans, Distance Learning and Research, ReQuest Service for Faculty, and Stack Maintenance.


This position supports UVic Libraries' values and objectives by contributing to a strong and diverse staff team dedicated to providing excellent customer service to Library users. 

Reporting to the Interlibrary Loan Operations Supervisor, the position acts as a point of contact in providing customer service to all library users and assists users with access to materials and services. 


The position assists with directing workflow and acts as a resource for staff in coordinating and accomplishing daily operations of Resource Sharing. The Resource Sharing Assistant works with a variety of specialized equipment, databases, and citation systems: e.g., the libraries’ management system – Alma; various interlibrary loan systems such as Relais ILL and OCLC WorldShare. This position requires lifting, bending, reaching, and pushing. 

Job Requirements


Experience: 

Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in a similar position, preferably in a post-secondary, library, or institutional environment; an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

may be considered. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

•   Demonstrated commitment to valuing the principles of truth, reconciliation and respect, equity diversity and inclusion, and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

•   Excellent organizational skills including attention to detail, time management, and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

•   Knowledge of library bibliographic records; familiarity with searching different libraries' catalogues to locate materials, assess holdings, and identify lending policies is an asset

•   Demonstrated experience in providing excellent public/customer service

•   Strong written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills

•   Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the general public in a consistently tactful and diplomatic manner while respecting confidentiality is essential

•   Ability to provide individual staff support and feedback

•   Ability to work effectively in an independent or team environment

•   Computer and software proficiency (Microsoft Office suite, social media, web tools, Excel, databases)

•   Ability to organize and complete work assignments accurately and on-time while balancing competing demands

•   Ability to work effectively with a diverse population and with all levels of university personnel

Specialized Knowledge/Education:

Secondary school graduation or equivalent.Some Post-secondary education is preferred.
