Economic Futures Analyst

Remote Victoria, BC

Job Overview:


The Economic Futures Analyst will be part of a passionate and forward-thinking team of professionals with a diverse range of backgrounds working toward SIPP’s mission of bolstering our region’s economic and social prosperity. This is a brand new position unlike any other across Canada. 


Since inception in 2016, SIPP has been gaining momentum and broad support across one of Canada’s most progressive metropolitan areas. This candidate will have opportunities for growth within the organization, while also connecting and collaborating with external stakeholders and leaders across a range of sectors, and across private, public, philanthropic, NGO and academic areas of influence.


The position will work closely with SIPP’s senior leadership to help deliver various initiatives as part of the SIPP’s strategic plan, but more holistically as part of SIPP’s thought leadership team to champion building place-based RISE (Resilient, Innovative, Sustainable and Equitable) economic development among local, national and international peer cities, communities and regions. 


The incumbent will have a passion for data but, more importantly, a passion for conveying it through compelling narrative and visualization. This RISE approach will be fundamental to the approach that this position will take as SIPP desires to create clear, compelling, and shareable narratives, case studies, data-driven plans and infographics, visual and video storytelling across various mediums in order to bring these approaches to life in programs, policies and in private and public realms.


The position will be directly involved in activities such as: 

  • Researching economic, socio-economic, environmental sustainability and demographic data relevant to Greater Victoria’s economic and place-based ecosystems;
  • With the support of SIPP’s communications and design team, compiling, producing and presenting data and information in compelling narratives, visuals, and through various mediums (blogs, PPT presentations, video, etc.) to a range of audiences from prospective investors, business clients, and SIPP stakeholders, such as municipal, NGO and institutional decision makers. 
  • The successful candidate will possess: a passion for a better world and better ways of doing things relative to 21st century challenges and opportunities; independent judgment, self-motivation, creative problem solving, some political/diplomatic acumen, communication skills, accuracy and attention to detail, and prioritizing and organizing a diverse workload. A broader list of skills is outlined below. This position will involve periodic work outside of regular office hours and may involve periodic out-of-town travel. 


Major Responsibilities:

  • Supporting discussion and research that contributes to recommendations to the senior management on sound economic development strategies and programs;
  • Conducting research and analysis to support the development of business support, business attraction, workforce development, and marketing and communication projects and programs;
  • Preparing correspondence, written reports, sector profiles, proposals, data summaries, visualizations/videos and presentations regarding key findings on target industries, markets, key messages, and partners, including content development and production of materials;
  • Providing economic, socio-economic, environmental/sustainability, demographic and other related information to existing and prospective businesses and investors, business development proponents, government and other private and public sector stakeholders, including relevant expertise and support for economic development initiatives;
  • Maintaining an awareness of current economic issues and opportunities important to Greater Victoria’s economy and SIPP’s priority sectors and opportunities;
  • Supporting and/or making presentations to the general public, community stakeholders, and business clients and prospects;
  • Coordinating and/or participating in conferences and trade-shows to represent and promote SIPP, its initiatives, and/or the Greater Victoria region;
  • Monitoring, maintaining, and producing content for use on platforms including but not limited to: blogs, social media platforms, websites, videos, marketing materials, advertisements, op-eds, and advertorials;
  • Performing other related duties as required.


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Understanding of ESG reporting and related analysis is a bonus.
  • Ability to conduct economic and market research. 
  • Strong knowledge of research and use of research and data to form arguments and compelling narratives in various formats. 
  • Proven ability to build relationships with community and business stakeholders. 
  • Exceptional ability to self-motivate and to function with minimum direction and supervision. 
  • Skills in facilitation, public presentations and public speaking.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build and maintain cooperative working relationships with SIPP team members and external collaborators.
  • Ability to deal courteously, tactfully and diplomatically with members of the general public, community and special interest groups, and internal and external customers. 
  • Ability to display independent initiative, judgment, creativity and innovation in developing future solutions. 
  • Grant, proposal and report writing skills are an asset
  • Strong organizational, time management and project management skills. 
  • Demonstrated competence with various computer programs pertaining to the work (Google Office Suite, MS Office Suite, and others such as: Wordpress, blog platforms, video recording/editing, specialized design platforms).
