Organization Description

Located on the territories of the Lekwungen speaking peoples the Belfry Theatre is Victoria BC’s largest professional not-for-profit theatre. As a professional theatre company, we are dedicated to producing contemporary plays, with an emphasis on Canadian work, and to promoting artistic, cultural, and educational events in the Greater Victoria Region.

Each season the Belfry produces four to six primarily Canadian contemporary plays, currently including at least one Indigenous-led production, and presents productions from across Canada as part of our annual SPARK Festival. Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance will be responsible for the overall financial operations of the Belfry, liaising routinely with all Heads of departments including Production & Planning, Marketing & Communications, Development, Artistic, Education & Participation, and Operations to manage and control expenditures.


Playing a critical role in the leadership team – in close collaboration with the Executive Director – the Director of Finance will prepare and monitor annual budgets of the theatre.


The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and receivable functions as well as managing the cash flow of the organization.  


Responsibilities


Accounting:

  • > Manage full-cycle accounting processes for the Belfry Theatre.
  • > Maintain month-end accounting records and prepare monthly financial statements.
  • > Prepare Bank reconciliations for operating, credit card and investment accounts.
  • > Manage cash flows for operations, cash on hand for liabilities and investment of excess cash.
  • > Ensure that capital assets are properly recorded and amortized.
  • > Prepare accurate financial statements and special reports for internal and external use.
  • > Maintain and improve financial accounting systems and internal controls.
  • > Ensure compliance with federal and provincial requirements.
  • > Participation in the Board and Finance Committee’s meetings and activities, as required.
  • > Manage relationships with bank, investment managers, and auditors.
  • > Complete annual Canadian Arts Data (CADAC) financial filings.
  • > Manage the annual audit process.
  • > Other related duties within the competencies of the Employee as requested by the Executive Director.


Payroll:

  • > Administer payroll to ensure that employees and contractors are paid in a timely, accurate manner.
  • > Ensure union dues, employee insurance, benefits, and RRSP contributions are processed accurately.
  • > Maintain employee records and other pertinent personnel data.
  • > Process and submit statutory remittances and benefits on time.
  • > Manage employee insurance and benefits plans.


Compliance

  • > File annual Registered Charities Returns with CRA.
  • > Ensure compliance with tax regulations, including GST, PST, and statutory remittances.
  • > Issue annual T4, T4A, T4A-NR forms and other CRA documents as required.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • > A degree or diploma in finance, accounting or related field is required.
  • > Minimum 5 years’ experience in financial accounting is required.
  • > Proficient user of accounting software (The Belfry currently uses Sage).
  • > Non-profit finance experience is an asset but not required.
  • > CPA designation an asset but not required.
  • > Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or valid Canadian work permit required.

  • > Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • > Salary $60,000 – $70,000 contingent on experience and qualifications.
