Job Summary
Reporting to the Budget and Business Analyst, the Accounting and Athletics Clerk works closely with the Senior Accounting(Officer/Coordinator) in the development and maintenance of the Athletics and Recreation accounting and administration records. Responsibilities include the preparation of accounting entries for submission to the University's central accounting system, support for the submission of daily sales reports and deposits, reconciliation of accounts, review of accounts for accuracy and completeness, comparing budgeted revenue and expenses to actual and reporting significant discrepancies to management. This position also works closely with and provides support to the Athletic Administrative Officer with athletics travel and administration support for Varsity coaches and athletes. Additional responsibilities include answering departmental inquiries in person and on the phone, and maintaining effective relationships with key central service areas (eg; Financial Services, Purchasing, Payroll). This position provides coverage for the Senior Accounting Clerk.
Vikes Athletics and Recreation is a seven days a week, 6 am -11 pm operation requiring this position to have the flexibility to work outside regular UVic business hours, according to operational requirements.
Job Requirements
Experience:
Must have a minimum of three (3) years of recent experience in a similar position, preferably in a post-secondary or institutional environment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Related work experience should include:
• Experience performing complex reconciliations, including GL account and bank reconciliations.
• Experience maintaining and following up on Accounts Payables, Accounts Receivables
• Experience using computer software for spreadsheets, wordprocessing and automated accounting programs.
• Experience with fund accounting an asset
Preference will be given to applicants with:
• Experience with UVic information systems
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Knowledge of accounting theory and practice gained through relevant work experience and accounting courses is essential.
• Demonstrated accounting skills and the ability to use programs such as FAST, Banner, Innosoft Fusion, Microsoft Office and Excel.
• Skilled at analytic work, attention to detail, and able to reconcile data.
• Ability to concentrate in a busy environment, with constant interruptions and adapt to change.
• Demonstated understanding of UVic accounting and purchasing policies
• Able to accurately respond to periods of high volume and time-sensitive information.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and planning skills.
• Ability to organize and communicate financial information effectively
• High level of investigative and analytical ability
• As an integral member of the ATRS team overseeing operations, it is essential that the Accounting Clerk be a team player and possess a genuine desire to provide quality support to ensure fiscal accountability.
Specialized Knowledge/Education:
Grade 12 completion plus Accounting Technician Certificate or at least first year standing in a recognized accounting program (CGA, CMA, CA)
